Paddles from the collection of Kirk Wipper
Dorset Heritage Museum
According to the joke attributed to Pierre Berton ‘Canadians know how to make love in a canoe'; that implies we know how to paddle one! Certainly most homes and cottages in this area have a stack of paddles in various sizes and conditions. We're hoping that our audience will consider their paddles in a new way after viewing the Paddles from the collection of Kirk Wipper. Our small exhibition of paddles is part of a collection that was amassed over many years by Kirk Wipper while he was actively acquiring the canoes that became the Kanawa Collection at the Canadian Canoe Museum. For the most part the paddles in this collection are meant to function as objects of art, reflecting the cultures they were collected from and marking a particular occasion or trip for Mr. Wipper. These paddles were not meant to actually propel a canoe on a physical voyage, but possibly invoke a dream canoe trip. The paddles' artful imagery leads us to think about the lives of the paddle makers, the forests where the wood was harvested, the waters where these paddles might have been used, or the stories told by their paddlers around campfires at dusk.
