Dorset Heritage Museum Building Renovations
The Dorset Heritage Museum and Tourist Information Centre settled into their new home and held a Grand Re Opening on June 17th, 2006. The museum property sits at the base of the 'mountain' at whose top sits another important landmark of Dorset the Dorset Scenic Tower. The Museum Committee's aim is to celebrate and communicate the history of Dorset and Area to present and future generations. The Museum's new home and grounds is a great place to do it! Stop in sometime, you'll be sure to stay awhile!

Memorial Wall and Donation Program
The Dorset Heritage Museum gratefully acknowledges gifts to the Museum by the placement of donor names In Memory Of, Helping Hands, or as a Donor. As an example for the ‘In Memory Of’, the museum has been listed as a place to donate to by some individuals when their loved one passes. You can also donate posthumously in order to have a name placed there. ‘Helping Hands’ is where we list the ones that have worked at the museum on special projects. ‘Donor’ is where we list all who support us and our programming. A tax receipt is provided. These wonderful gestures are gratefully acknowledged and appreciated.
Special Projects
All monies donated to the museum are used to fund our Special Projects.
The following is a list of projects the Working Committee would like to work on over the next few years.
Protection of Outdoor Exhibits: An extension of the veranda roof, to be done this year 2010
Drive Shed Out Building: to cover the farm equipment display, to be done this year 2010
First Nations Exhibit Enhancement: update current display, to be done this year 2010
New Signage: for our exhibits, to give a more professional, cohesive look throughout the museum.
Educational Research: to provide research opportunities to be conducted specifically around the involvement and contribution of members of our First Nations.
Pioneer Memory Tour: Written as a guide it would provide detailed info about specific points of historical interest for the Dorset area. This guide would enable visitors and residents to plan their own leisurely walk, motor or boat tour to discover places, past and present that have historical significance.
Experiential Learning: to share the accomplishments, challenges, and hardships of pioneer living as well as providing updated information about historical events in the area. This goal would be achieved through:
- Heritage Day (2nd Weekend of July annual)
- Bread making, butter churning, jam making
- Good Old School Days
- Emergencies on ‘Pill Hill’, Dorset’s First Aid Post 1920
- Trapping on the frontier
- Memories of a steamship Captain... Iroquois, Mohawk Belle, Bigwin, or Maple Leaf
Historic Cemetery Visit: talk with real settlers in authentic costume
Speak With A Tower Ranger: on the history of the Dorset Fire Tower
University Link Program: research on a variety of subjects
Building Extension: To house exhibits, inside storage, and a special room to take in artefact to be checked and cleaned before going into the museum proper. This project unlike the other ones listed would take a few years to acquire funding.
